Checked the soccer results online this morning, & discovered the shock result that I didn't want to see - Barcelona crashed to 4-0 defeat away to Getafe in the Spanish Cup semi-final second leg. The result meant that Barcelona crash out of the Spanish Cup 6-5 on aggregate, as they had beaten Getafe 5-2 in the first leg in Barcelona, in which young Leo Messi scored the magnificent solo effort shown in an earlier post (refer "Maradona 1986 v Messi 2007").
It's unbelievable, abysmal & shocking.....absolutely shocking. What a disaster, & what a complete waste. You'd think Barcelona are as good as the final already, after being 5-2 up from the first leg. But no, they let in 4 goals in the return match. How could they lose this badly?? I'm not a happy man after seeing that result, so if any of u see me in a grumpy mood over the next few days, u know why.
The Spanish media, especially those from Madrid, have slammed Barcelona's abject & stuttering display in the 4-0 debacle. And perhaps deservedly so, because Barcelona have been very under par as of late. However, Getafe should get some credit for their battling display, & Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has been magnanimous & sporting in defeat - while acknowledging the result is a blow & considering it the worst night of his coaching career, he offered no excuses & congratulated Getafe on their achievement.
What now? Barcelona only have the Spanish league to play for. They are still top of the table, but by only 2 points from old enemies Real Madrid. There are 5 league games left, & one of them is against....Getafe. In their current form, u do wonder if Barcelona can hold on to their top place. I hope Barcelona will react positively to the Spanish Cup semi-final fiasco, bounce back & show some character in adversity. They need to save some face & finish the season with credibility. Come on Barcelona, put the bad result behind u, get back to the drawing board, & show us what u are made of. Hola Barca!
