Article - Is coffee the key to beating bad breath?

Interesting article on coffee & bad breath. I was always under the impression that coffee contributes to bad breath, rather than help prevents it. Maybe that's true only for certain people. I have smelt bad breath which contains coffee (& nothing else). The worst of all is bad breath containing coffee, tuna & tobacco. Yuk - that's gross (though I don't tell that to people's face!)

I'm no coffee expert - I don't drink that much coffee. I drink more tea than coffee - especially over the last few months. At work (during morning & afternoon tea breaks), I only ever drink tea, but not coffee. I can definitely say from my experience that tea does not cause bad breath, thank goodness.

Anyway, here is the article (
http://www.cosmopolitan.com.au/coffee_breath.htm)

Coffee Breath!

Australians love their morning coffee. We need that latte, flat white, or cappuccino to get us buzzing all the way till lunch time. Recent ABS statistics has shown we consume a whopping 1.23 million cups of coffee a day. But what about the side effects?

Coffee has long been noted as the cause for bad breath - but new research suggests this isn't true. In fact, it could be quite the opposite. The coffee bean could hold the secret to keeping bad breath at bay.

Research shows that coffee beans contain compounds that prevent bacteria releasing the gases behind halitosis (the disease for bad breathe. Coffee beans contain a special compound that prevents bacteria. Pinpointing the key chemicals could lead to coffee 'mints' or pastilles that stop bad breath at the source.

The research by Professor Mel Rosenberg, has found that adding black coffee to 'soups' of bacteria-filled saliva blocked the release of gases that cause breath to smell. In some cases, the amount of gas was cut by up to 90 per cent.

“We expected that coffee would cause bad breath but there is something inside this magic brew that has the opposite effect.”

RIP Michael Jackson

Everywhere u turn, people would be talking about it. It happened so suddenly & unexpectedly. It's all over the news & it's making big headlines, like "Michael Jackson is dead" or "Michael Jackson dies". Just shortly after Farah Fawcett died, another famous entertainer (& truly famous, at that) is gone from this world. Yep, MJ is gone. Totally unbelievable.

MJ needs no introduction. Everyone knows who he is, & everyone knows how good he is at what he does. He is the King of Pop, the master of his craft, an icon of the music industry. He has done so very much for the music & entertainment industry. Millions of people idolise him, or at least follow him closely. He is unquestionably talented - in fact, even saying that might not amount to enough praise for MJ's standing in the music industry.

Like I said, he needs no introduction, so I don't need to elaborate any further on who he is or his achievements in the music & entertainment industry. But he is dead, tragically gone at only 51. More details of his death will come out in due course. I never idolised MJ & won't consider myself a truly huge fan of MJ. But I consider him as someone who is "great to have around", & I do appreciate his music. So when I found out about his death just after lunch today, I felt really sad. Yeah, that is how big MJ is - even those who don't follow him particularly closely (like myself) can be moved by news of his tragic death.
A lot of my Facebook friends updated their status profile to comment on MJ's death. They are much much bigger MJ fans that I am, & I am already feeling sad.....so imagine how much sadder they must be.

Now, MJ is a controversial character & has made lots of headlines over the years for less than positive reasons. I won't elaborate into all of that. But all that stuff never diminished my overall positive opinion of him.
Okay, so MJ not be an angel. Okay, so MJ may have some character flaws. And okay, he may have made mistakes here & there, & have done some things in his life which we disapprove. But frankly, I have never really been prepared to accept that he is anywhere near as bad as sections of the media have portrayed him. I mean, come on, are we to really believe everything that they say about him???

Instead, I choose to remember MJ for what he does best - his music, his entertainment. Thank u, MJ for all your wonderful songs, your dance moves, your entertainment. You are certainly one of a kind - there will never be another one like u.
RIP Michael Jackson. You will be sadly missed.

Spain stumble in Confederations Cup shock

A shock result at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final in South Africa: US 2 Spain 0

I saw the match on SBS & was, of course, supporting Spain. The result is sad & a little embarrassing for the Spaniards. To a certain extent, it happened because Spain had a "off day". They played below their usual high standards. They still managed to create some chances but they just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net
. A few Barcelona players represented Spain: Xavi, Puyol, Pique. However, there is one Barcelona player who was absent. Iniesta (a key midfielder for club & country) was not at this tournament due to injury. But his absence is no excuse at all - a half-strength Spain should still have been able to beat the US.

The loss to the Americans is the first time Spain lost a match since November 2006. It brings an end to a long unbeaten run - 35 games without loss, equal with Brazil's record. Spain would have set a new record of 36 if they had not lost against the US. It also means that there cannot now be a dream Spain v Brazil final. Both teams could still meet, but only in the third-place playoff & that is only if Brazil loses to South Africa in the other semi-final.

Spain may have had an "off day". But by gosh, the US were very good! They were so disciplined & organised, & they can play a bit too. They played the counter-attacking game very well. The fact that Michael Bradley (son of US coach Bob Bradley) got sent off 4 minutes from the end made no difference to the final result. It is a sensational result for Team USA, & they are now through to the Confederations Cup final. Who would have predicted this? Credit to them for a strong performance. Whether they play Brazil or South Africa in the final, the US will certainly be no pushovers, based on their semi-final performance against Spain.

The result, while not what I had wanted, does remind me of why I love football - it can be unpredictable. In football, upsets/surprise results are possible, unlike some other sports where 1 or 2 teams constantly dominates.

How fast R U? Teen girl wins US texting title‏

This girl has too much time on her hands. Me, I don't think I ever sent out more than 30 SMSes in any given month. This girl, on the other hand.....well, as they say, only in America :)

Here is the article:

How fast R U? Teen girl wins US texting title‏

The newest U.S. texting champion has a message for parents across the land - although they might not want to hear it.

"Let your kid text during dinner! Let your kid text during school! It pays off," 15-year-old Kate Moore said Tuesday after winning the LG U.S. National Texting Championship.

After all, she said: "Your kid could win money and publicity and a phone."

For the Des Moines, Iowa, teenager, her 14,000 texts-per-month habit reaped its own rewards, landing her the competition prize of $50,000 just eight months after she got her first cell phone.

Moore, with a speedy and accurate performance, beat out 20 other finalists from around the U.S. over two days of challenges such as texting blindfolded and texting while maneuvering through a moving obstacle course.

In the final showdown, she outtexted 14-year-old Morgan Dynda, of Savannah, Georgia. Both girls had to text three lengthy phrases without making any mistakes on the required abbreviations, capitalization or punctuation. Moore squeaked through by a few seconds on the tiebreaking text, getting the best two out of three. As she anxiously waited for confirmation of her win, tears streamed down her face.

The teen dismisses the idea that she focuses too much on virtual communications, saying that while she has sometimes had her phone taken away from her in school, she keeps good grades, performs in school plays and socializes with friends _ in person _ on the weekends.

In between, she finds time to send about 400 to 470 texts a day. Among her uses of the text messages? Studying for exams with friends, which she says is better done by text because she can look back at the messages to review.

The finalists, all 22 or younger, were among 250,000 people who tried to get spots in the competition. Some won their spots at the Manhattan finals by being the fastest people to text responses to televised ads.

It's the third year for the texting competition, sponsored by LG Electronics Inc.'s mobile-phones division. But it's the first time that it was held at a flashy sound stage with an illuminated platform and surrounded by TV cameras. LG, based in Seoul, South Korea, is considering using the footage in a televised special of some kind.

Twenty-year-old Jackie Boyd, who came in fifth in the competition, said she usually prefers text messages to phone calls because they get through faster and they're more private _ leaving her unworried about other people listening in.

"You can get more of what you really truly want to say" across with texting, said the Syracuse University psychology major. "Especially if it's an argument, you don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing.

"And if you don't want to respond, you can always say, 'Oh, I didn't get your text.'"

CBA postpones staff party after outcry

See previous post where CBA throw a party after jacking up interest rates? Now see below for latest developments. At least sanity prevails, thank goodness.

Here is the article:

CBA cancels staff party after rate hike outcry

16/06/2009 4:30:00 PM By Stuart Fagg, ninemsn Money

Commonwealth Bank of Australia has postponed a controversial $100,000 party for 800 staff after details of the event were reported by the media.

The bank was attacked by unions and customers over the party, which was being held just days after the bank raised interest rates on its variable mortgage, adding nearly $220 a year to repayments on a $300,000 homeloan.

The bank issued a statement this afternoon announcing that the party, which was to have had a 1920s gangster theme, had been postponed.

CBA spokesperson Bryan Fitzgerald said the bank acknowledged public concerns over the staging of the party in the current economic envrionment but remained committed to rewarding and recogising the contribuition of its staff.

Mr Fitzgerald added that reports that the party was to have featured Krug champagne and cavier were incorrect adding that the event was "to be of a modest scale with an Australian wine package and mini burgers".

The party had been organised for the bank's financial services dvision to celebrate the end of the financial year.

"The Bank would like to point out that the Financial Services event was a once a year function for staff of all levels in this division in lieu of a christmas party," Mr Fitzgerald said.

The bank angered homeowners and politicians late last week by announcing a 10 basis point rise in its variable mortgage interest rate.

The bank blamed higher funding costs on the move, but Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the bank’s action threatened Australia's fragile economic recovery, while Treasurer Wayne Swan called the bank “selfish”.

Mr Swan warned yesterday of community outrage if another retail bank lifts its lending rates, adding that he did not believe the decision was justified.

"I believe that if any other bank were to take a similar decision, there would be understandable community outrage," he told reporters.

Reports this morning suggested that National Australia Bank and Westpac had raised rates on their fixed mortgage interest rates while ANZ bank raised rates on its fixed rate mortgages for 10 year loans two weeks ago.

North Korea qualifies for 2010 World Cup

North Korea's football team have qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa! They secured qualification after drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia in Riyadh. Both teams ended up with equal number of points on the final standings, but North Korea (also known as DPR Korea) qualify because of a better goal difference. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia will have to enter the Asian playoffs to get to the World Cup.

Not many would have rated North Korea's chances of qualifying for the World Cup, given that their final round Asian qualifying group is tough, with opponents like Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates & neighbours South Korea. It's a tough line-up, so for North Korea to have gone through is a fantastic achievement. They join their southern neighbours in next year's tournament in South Africa.

Congratulations to the North Korean team. I am happy that they will be at next year's World Cup. This will be North Korea's first World Cup since their first appearance in the 1966 World Cup in England. Then, they had a fairy-tale run that saw them upset Italy 1-0 on the way to a quarter-final appearance against Portugal (led by the great Eusebio), when the North Koreans raced to a 3-goal lead before eventually succumbing 5-3. England ended up winning the 1966 World Cup on home soil, their sole World Cup triumph to date, & that was the only time North Korea appeared in the World Cup so far. So maybe, just maybe North Korea's presence at next year's World Cup for the second time may be seen as a lucky omen by some English fans who are hoping for England to win their second World Cup.

So much for omens! Whether England will win the World Cup next year is open to question. What is not so questionable is the great opportunity for North Korean football to step onto the grandstage & show what they have to offer. This is definitely, without question, a rare opportunity for North Korea's best footballers to display their abilities to the world. They, like every other teams who get to the World Cup, will be guaranteed 3 group matches. They will get more if they get past the group stage to the knockout stage. But at the very least, 3 World Cup matches is what they can get. Play decently in the group matches (& more if they get past the group stage), & the European scouts will take notice, which in turn may lead to a contract with a European football club. And the more North Korean players play overseas, the more exposure they get to higher level football, which will only benefit the North Korean team in the long run.

This, really, should be the way forward for them. Today, there are only a handful of players in the current North Korean squad (no more than 6) who play their club football outside North Korea - in Japan, China, South Korea, Russia & Switzerland. So that means that the North Korean squad has limited exposure to international football. At the risk of repeating myself, more players should play overseas (especially in other European countries) for them to improve. The quick way for the players to get a European club football contract is for the team to give a good showing at next year's World Cup.

Whether the North Korean team can make the most of this opportunity remains to be seen. I, for one, wish them the very best of luck (I have a "soft spot" for East Asian teams, as I am of Oriental Asian descent), & I will be keeping an eye on them at the World Cup.

CBA ups interest rates, then chuck a party??!!

This is absolutely disgraceful & uncalled for. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) raises up interest rates, claiming this is needed because it costs them money to lend funds. Then they turn around & throw a colossal party. What on earth is going on??!!!

I don't mind telling u, dear readers, that I used to bank with CBA. I left them in 2002, after they decided to impose monthly bank fees on my account - regardless of balance or frequency of usage. I still remember that day. I lined up in the CBA's Queen St branch in the Brisbane CBD, & there was a massive queue - about a dozen people in front of me, & even more people behind me. I could hear the people in front of me telling the CBA counter that they are closing their CBA accounts due to that monthly bank fee. So when it came to my turn, the CBA officer could guess my reason for closing my CBA account. I moved my balance to St George Bank, & have been with them since (I also got various savings accounts with a few other banks).

As for CBA, well....tsk tsk tsk.

Here's the article:

CBA parties on after slugging homeowners with rate rise
16/06/2009 9:00:00 AM By Stuart Fagg, ninemsn Money

Commonwealth Bank of Australia will throw a party for 800 staff at a cost of nearly $100,000 just days after slugging homeowners with rise in variable interest rates.

A spokesperson for the bank confirmed that the party, which will have a 1920s gangster theme, will take place this week in Sydney. A report in the Herald Sun newspaper said the bank would spend $500,000 on the party, a claim that CBA spokesperson Bryan Fitzgerald denied.

"The cost of the event is around $100 per head," Mr Fitzgerald said. "This is the same as last year. Many of these staff will not receive any salary increase in the coming year as has already been announced by the bank."

He added that the division for whom the party is being held – the financial services division – does not have a Christmas party.

"This division has a once a year function to recognise the end of the financial year. It does not have a christmas party," Mr Fitzgerald said. "The event is a staff rewards and recognition event that reflects the hard work and long hours undertaken by the financial services team over the end of the financial year period."

The bank angered homeowners and politicians late last week by announcing a 10 basis point rise in its variable mortgage interest rate, a move set to add nearly $220 a year to payments on a $300,000 mortgage.

Kaka first, then C Ronaldo world record transfer

In the last couple of days, Real Madrid have really rocked the football world with big money transfers. First, they set the transfer record fee by signing Brazil's midfield maestro Kaka from AC Milan for £57 million. Then, they beat that record by signing Portugal's sensational winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United for £80 million, so that is now the new world record transfer fee. The Ronaldo transfer is yet to be completed, but will be so by the end of this month if there are no further complications.

Wow, 2 earth-shattering, bank breaking, big money deals in just a matter of days. "Obscene" money!!! And all this, during the global financial crisis. There's no financial crisis for some, it seems. Anyway, it looks like this is Real Madrid's response to arch-rivals Barcelona winning the treble. They didn't take too kindly to being completely overshadowed by Barcelona (& as a Barca fan, I am only too happy to type this out!!).

Florentino Perez recently returned as Real Madrid's president, after holding that post between 2000 & 2007. Between 2000 & 2003, Perez waved the cheque book to bring Luis Figo (from Barcelona, that traitor!), Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo (the original Brazilian version), & David Beckham to the club. The big money signings were known as the galácticos, & those 4 players were known as the first galácticos. Well, now Perez is back & he promised that Real Madrid would again spend big, to try to return to their former glory days. And look at how he delivered on that promise - first Kaka, then C Ronaldo. Both of them herald in the start of the second galácticos, & there could well be more expensive signings - they really are the order of the day when Perez is around.

Whether the second version can be as successful as the first remains to be seen. Real Madrid won the Spanish league title in 2001 & 2003 & the Champions League in 2002. They signed Beckham after winning the league in 2003, but then won nothing until they won the 2007 Spanish title (yes, Beckham had to wait that long to win his first title with Real). So the first galácticos did pick up some trophies. During 2004 to 2006 (when Real Madrid won no trophies), Barcelona won 2 Spanish league titles (in 2005 & 2006) & the UEFA Champions League in 2006. Do take note that this is the same number of trophies as that won by Real's first galácticos, yet Barcelona had spent far less transfer money than Real Madrid did in signing the first galácticos.

So now that Barcelona got the treble in 2008/2009 season, we shall see what Real's second galácticos can do. Barcelona achieved their success without spending anywhere near as much as Real have done on Kaka & Cristiano Ronaldo alone. Both players are immensely talented, no questions there. But will all that money spent bring success to Real Madrid? Only time will tell. Real Madrid must really win big to even begin to justify all that spending. If Real don't achieve sufficient success, imagine the repercussions!

Argentina slip up - again

Argentina lose another away game, this time 2-0 away to Ecuador in the high altitude of Quito. They seem to be floundering under Diego Maradona's coaching - if u can call him a coach. The Ecuador debacle came just days after Argentina narrowly & unconvincingly beat Colombia 1-0 at home. Reports say Argentina may have been a little unlucky in Ecuador, with a penalty missed when the score was stil goalless & chances created but not converted. Pffffhhh, enough with all that. And the end of the day, they didn't do the business they were supposed to do, & so it's back to the drawing board.

This Argentinian team seem to be uncomfortable playing at high altitude.
They lost heavily in Bolivia just months ago, at the even higher altitude of La Paz. And now, they lost in Ecuador. Why this aversion to altitude? I'm not sure why. During the previous series of South American qualifiers 4 years ago (when qualifying for the 2006 World Cup), Argentina beat both Bolivia & Ecuador away, at the same high altitude venues that they recently lost in. So the business can be done, if the team is properly prepared & focused. It should be noted that the Argentinian teams that recently lost in Bolivia & Ecuador are no less talented than the ones which won at both places 4 years ago. What's different? The coach. Jose Pekerman was the coach 4 years ago, & he is a much better coach than Maradona currently is. Pekerman may have made some mistakes here & there, but he is said to be far superior to Maradona when it comes to various aspects of coaching, tactics, motivation, pre-match preparation, etc. Maradona is not the right man to take charge of Argentina. That's what a majority of Argentinian fans think & that's what I think too. No one knows why he was appointed in the first place, when better candidates could have been chosen. But the fact is, he is in charge. And so, the fans will have to just wince & bear it while he continues to bungle his way through the rest of the World Cup qualifiers.

WWE released Umaga!

Now, for something that made me very unhappy. The WWE has just released Umaga, the 350-pound Samoan Bulldozer who is related to Dwayne Johnson.

I'm in shock. And frankly, I just don't understand this decision. Why get rid of Umaga?? What has he done to deserve this?? Was it because of something he did behind the scenes which WWE are not making public? Was it because Umaga didn't want to sign a new deal with the company? Was it because the company had no plans for Umaga? Politics, maybe? The full details may emerge later. Heck, maybe it was Umaga who requested to leave the company. But for the moment, I am assuming that WWE was the one who made the decision to get rid of Umaga, & that is a very dumb decision. Umaga is a very talented wrestler, with some good in-ring moves, & I find him to be quite entertaining. Even though he is a "bad guy"/villain in the ring, I still go for him against pretty much anyone he fought, even though his opponents are the "good guys". Umaga is a better wrestler than most of the WWE roster - yet they let him go, while inferior wrestlers are allowed to remain in the company.

I don't like how WWE has treated Umaga over the past few weeks - they scripted him to lose to CM Punk, on the recent Smackdown show & on this weekend's pay-per-view show Extreme Rules. Maybe it's better that Umaga have nothing to do with WWE, if they treat him like that.

I hear some wrestling fans lamenting the fact that WWE is going downhill, saying that wrestling these days are not as good as they were in the Attitude Era of the 1990s & early 2000s. With some "funny" decisions made by WWE of late, the latest being Umaga's release, I can understand why those fans feel that way.

Roger Federer wins 15th Grand Slam

Roger Federer has just won a record 15th Grand Slam titles, after beating Andy Roddick in the 2009 Wimbledon final. It is his 6th Wimbledon title. With it, he overtakes Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles which he matched after winning the French Open title last month for the very first time.

What a great couple of months it has been for Federer Express. On a professional level, he equalled & then surpasses Sampras' record after winning those 2 Grand Slam titles - some achievement, that. And on a personal level, he became a father for the first time, to twin girls!

Congratulations, Roger Federer! You are a true legend in tennis & in sports, not just for your talent & excellence, but also your personality & good sportsmanship. Has Federer now regained the number 1 ranking in men's tennis? Or is Nadal still number 1? I haven't been following the rankings for ages! Anyway, it doesn't matter. I like them both.

Man Utd - Champions League parody

Barcelona's UEFA Champions League win over Manchester Utd last month would have been widely celebrated by their fans worldwide, myself included. I wish I could have been there in Barcelona to join in the fiesta! By contrast, the result was greeted with dismay by United supporters & a gnashing of teeth by sections of the British media.

I managed to find some funny clips on Football Guardian's website, which were submitted by readers & subscribers. The clips parody United's showing in the Champions League final. The people who posted these might not have been United fans. But anyway, have a look. Comments are my own, unless in italics.

Submitted by Ambrose Heron: "Director Ken Loach has made some last minute changes to his new film."

Submitted by Brendan Ashbrook: "The greatest trick the (Red) Devils ever played was convincing the world their defence existed".

For those who don't follow football closely, Barcelona's home stadium is the Nou Camp, hence the reference to "Nou-sual suspects". The players paraded are all Barcelona footballers.

Submitted by Colin Hammond: "It's Ronald'oh".

That is Cristiano Ronaldo with Homer Simpson's head photoshopped. Ronaldo may have played his last game for the club, as over the last few months, there has been strong speculation that he will be moving to Real Madrid, which happen to be Barcelona's arch-rivals. "Ronald'oh" is an apt description for his unimpressive performance in the Champions League final, suggesting that his mind was elsewhere & adding further fuel to the transfer speculation.

Here are my other thoughts: Real Madrid's traditional home kit is white. United used their white away kit for the Champions League final, so I guess Ronaldo already has some experience in losing to Barcelona while wearing white, which will be very useful should he move to Madrid! Hahaha!!!

Submitted by Martin Myers: "90 minutes of classic British comedy (defending) set in Rome".

Submitted by Martin Nicholson: "He was Rio's worst nightmare: a striker who plays in the hole all night, then pops up in the box to score".

This looks like a dig at United for the second goal scored by Barcelona via a header by Leo Messi, despite being far shorter than any of the United defenders (Rio Ferdinand & all).

Submitted by Thomas Nycz-Losi: "This will never work", protests Thierry Henry (right). "Just shut up and smuggle me to Spain before Fergie sees me," replies Manchester's favourite Portugueezer.

It really looks like Ronaldo will be playing club football in Spain next season, though not at Barcelona.

It's official - junk food IS addictive

Here's an article I just stumbled across via NineMSN (called "Sugar high"). It's very true & not surprising, really - junkfood is definitely addictive. Well, speaking for myself anyway, it's true. Once u start consuming, u just want more, & u just keep going. Try opening a can of Pringles, for instance. Remember the Pringles punchline "once you pop you can't stop". Well, it's so true isn't it, if u know what I mean ;)

Sugar high

In news that's hardly eyebrow-raising (but is a little depressing)...junk food is addictive.

A study at the University of South Australia examined the effects of junk food on rats. The rats allowed to eat diets high in sugar and fat not only put on weight, but also became anxious when the junk food was replaced with healthier options. The lead researcher, Zhi Yi Ong, also discovered that the rats would often prefer to go hungry than to eat the healthier alternatives.

The rationale behind the results is that foods high in sugar and fat can trigger the release of dopamine in the brain's central reward pathway - the same area affected by illegal drugs.

"We're speculating junk food can down-regulate (desensitise) the reward pathway in our brains," Ms Ong said.

"So if you have consumed too much, you have to consume more and more in order to feel the same happy feeling."

Recruitment agents - gotta "love" them

I've been out of work now since I got retrenched at the end of January 2009. In the current global financial crisis, many people would be in the same boat as me - laid off & looking to get back into the workforce. The thing, though, is that a lot of organisations are freezing their recruitment, so there is very little hiring activities out there at the moment.

Ok, so a recruitment agency recently got me an interview for a temporary contract position in the Brisbane CBD. The interview went well, & everything is set for me to start the contract role this week. Well, the recruitment agent recently called me & told me the start date will be postponed till next week. The postponement happened because of some last minute changes to the schedule of the managing director of the company that I would be based in. The managing director will be out of Brisbane until next week & I cannot start my role while he is away.

I got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I'm happy that I still got some more free time for a few more days. Ok, I've already had free time for about 4 months now! But I consider that to be a "bad break" (because involuntarily unemployment, & no income). But it's nice to still have a bludge until next week. On the other hand, I will have to wait until next week before I start getting some income.

I know on this occasion, it doesn't seem to be the agent's fault that my start day has changed. But hey, this is yet another instance where a recruitment agent says something, then turns around the next time & says something different. Recruitment agents - u just got to "love" them. Hahahaha.

Out & about for the last few days

I've been out & about during the last few days:

Friday 29/5/2009

I had a dinner with a few friends in the Brisbane CBD. The occasion: one of my friends resigned & Friday was her last day at work. She called a few people (about 7-8 people including myself) to have dinner somewhere in the city to "celebrate" the end of what she considers a miserable job (she was only there for a few months & had enough of it).

I wore my Barcelona t-shirt proudly, to commemorate their Champions League success. I saw 1-2 people on Queen St Mall wearing their Barca jerseys, & they smiled at me when they saw my t-shirt (presumably, they were just as happy as I was with Barca's triumph). When my close friend Ivan C (who supports the beaten finalist Manchester Utd) saw my t-shirt, he groaned & poked me a little. I kept smiling & rubbed it in a little: "Have they played the final already?? Really?? So who won?". I reminded Ivan C of his pre-match confidence in a Man Utd victory, but on the whole I think I let Ivan C off pretty lightly. Ivan C didn't say much, but he was ok about it - Barcelona so happens to be his second favourite team.

I forgot the name of the place we had dinner, but I was there for the first time. I ordered a steak, as did a few others. It was quite good (then again, I'm easy to please with steaks), & not too expensive. It was raining very heavily, & I thanked my lucky stars that I remembered to bring my umbrella. So we soldiered onto a dessert place in Mary St (again, my first time there), & continued our conversations over dessert. By the time I got on the bus to head back home, it was not far from midnight.

Saturday 30/5/2009, Sunday 31/5/2009

Pastor Ben had a "thank you party" at his place on Saturday evening, to thank all those who recently helped him move/relocate houses & the cleaning & painting his Indooroopilly house. I was really impressed with how the Indooroopilly house turned out. It was superb! I was really happy for Pastor Ben, his wife Faith & the 2 little daughters.

We had a BBQ at the back, just in front of the swimming pool (but no one swam). As someone who likes meat, I took the BBQ pretty well. There was quite a turnout, too - more than 20 people, mostly from our church, but there were some old friends of Ben & myself from other churches like Shail, his wife Eunice & their 2 little kids. It was fun to see their kids play with Ben & Faith's 2 kids!

After chatting to a few people & having dessert, it was time for me to depart because I had to pick up my brother BT & Ivan C on the way to Nigel's place to watch the FA Cup final between Chelsea & Everton, whom Nigel supports. Before I left Ben's house, Shail (who supports Chelsea) had told me he's very confident of a Chelsea victory.
Shail was gracious with my Barcelona's Champions League win even though Barcelona eliminated Chelsea in the semi-finals. I didn't blame him for confidently predicting a win over Everton, as I tipped Chelsea to win, too.

Nigel decorated the TV area with his Everton scarves. It was like a shrine. Me, BT & Ivan C just laughed. I told Nigel of Shail's prediction, to which Nigel expressed confidence that Everton would win. Phuong invited Tim, her Welsh colleague, along. Everyone was neutral, apart from Nigel & BT who was going for Chelsea in this match (partly to stir Nigel). The FA Cup final kicked off at midnight. Everton got off to a great start, with their French striker Louis Saha scoring after just 25 seconds, the fastest goal in FA Cup final history. And how Nigel celebrated!! He went mad! But Chelsea gradually worked their way into the match & Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba headed in the equaliser in the 21nd minute. Chelsea then proceeded to control most of the rest of the match, & it was no surprise that England midfielder Frank Lampard scored the winner with a well-struck shot in the 72nd minute. Chelsea could have scored another goal, but Malouda's shot was wrongly disallowed, despite replays showing his shot bounced over the goalline after crashing the bar. So Chelsea wins 2-1, & their outgoing coach Guus Hiddink (who was in charge of Chelsea temporarily, for part of this season) sign off with a trophy. Chelsea have the better players & they were able to make this count. And also (much to Nigel's agreement), some of the Everton players were not at their best, & so were not able to pose Chelsea too much problems.

We laughed when Tim (Phuong's Welsh colleague) called Lampard "yer English twit" during the match - we knew there is a rivalry between the English & the Welsh when it comes to sports. What I didn't find so amusing was the SBS panel who were far too focused on Tim Cahill (who plays for Everton) during their pre-match & half-time analysis. It's almost as if Cahill was the only footballer who exist at Everton. It's really sad to see the way some of the SBS panel talked about Cahill & nothing else.

Anyway, Nigel was obviously disappointed with the final result (but undoubtedly Shail watching at his home would have been happy). Wee commiserated with Nigel before we left. By the time I got home, it was almost 3am! Late, but it was well worth it!

Monday 1/6/2009

Alison & I had a catch-up lunch with Davin & Irene at Little Hong Kong, in Market Square, Sunnybank. Davin & Irene were in Brisbane for a visit before they head back to London. They brought along their 2 little daughters, whom I met for the very first time. The elder daughter looks very much like Davin, while the second one resembles Irene. Hmmmm, isn't it interesting that the first born child of my friends all look like their fathers????

Anyway, it was great catching up with Davin & Irene over a meal, as I wasn't able to do this on their previous visit to Brisbane. The roast duck, char siu (BBQ pork) & siu yoke (crispy skin pork) were absolutely superb!! With delicious meat dishes like these, who would want to be a vegetarian?? Haha. We talked about lots of stuff. From the sounds of it, Davin & family enjoy London, but they would come back in Brisbane eventually. I do miss them - Davin is someone I consider/look up to as an older brother & I may have built up a close friendship with him had he remained in Brisbane all these years.

We managed to bump into Stella & her family at the car park just outside 7-Eleven at Market Square. By the time I headed home, the greasy lunch was starting to take an effect on me, such that I decided to skip the Clay Bible study in the evening. That worked out well, because it means I could join my family for the family dinner to celebrate dad's birthday. We had steamboat - truly delicious & not greasy like the lunch I had. Andrew & Val were here, & the dinner allowed us to reminisce about that wonderful steamboat dinner we all had in Malaysia back in December 2008 with Uncle Paul & Aunty Daisy & my dad's cousins. Ahhh, memories!
